A year ago we did not think he would make it and here is is, alive and ageing as well as possible, at 12.5. Now we will start counting by the month, til Xmas?
Well, it’s now been one year of fighting every day..but we won. 6 months ago I was only hoping he would make it til the end of November..which is when his mother died at age 11.5 and now I am hopeful he will make it until his 12th birthday, in 3 weeks..The gallstone, after several blood tests and a couple of scanners, turned out to be biliairy “mud” which is all gone and he is feeling much better for an old man. Now, he is just getting old. The way I wanted it to be. Halleluiah.
…because he’s worth it. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for GuyGuy to eat.
It’s a 5-course meal, spoon fed to direct him to eating kibble and…the end of a chicken bone, then white chicken meat, then some boiled herring, then some oven cooked herring, then some chicken liver ( a very very small amount) and back to adding chicken. He walks away, goes to drink, goes outside ( for obvious reasons) comes back and stretches his stomach while eating…it’s no easy feat and I just deal with it for as long as necessary. Twice a day or x3 depending….but he is ok, and happy and has gained weight, as he has gone from just over 20k in May to 23.4.
He is taking medication and homeopathy and whatever cookies and anything he likes. He has chronic bouts where he will begin to throw up and then onto more medication, every 4/5 weeks and right now I am hoping that then homeopathy we started 2 weeks ago is going to prevent him from having an issue or at least that he can feel ok longer. It’s been 5 weeks and he is feeling a bit under the weather right now.So, we take each day as it comes.
With elderly dogs that is the only way to go. Make them happy, so you can well imagine that for 2018, if all goes well I will have time to continue helping him and enjoy the others who need the same attention.
Today is another big day as there have been many over the years since the creation of a club for the Barbet et al.. there are yet again elections to vote for who will save the barbet Moderne from extinction...keeping in mind that the barbet Moderne (swiss kraüsli) was created in the 1980's by JEAN-claude HERMANS, to equal the work of Messieurs Korthals and Boulet..and destroy what was left of the VIEUX BARBET ( standard written in 1886 for a Barbet d'arrêt, not a converted standard poodletype. The Vieux Barbet will not survive another dictator because after 35 years of trying to keep its head above water, I think the situation is hopeless (has been) and the club is not the only one to blame.That's life.The history of the breed to date will be written and all those who fought to destroy each other and the breed will have their place in the long list of socutensonicehowIam...They are all in Lyon today, to vote..for another ignoramus.
I have been off for a long time because I have had a lot to do. I am also trying to get my motivation level up high enough to tell you so many things..This below is so true and when you read it, it hits home.
We have less and less people who know what a Barbet de chasse is, more and more who don’t care and a majority looking to make their production the ideal type.It does get to you after a while and on your nerves as you can imagine.
I have 2 treasures…they are great/great-grandparents, have produced healthy puppies and many champions. My dogs live with me and not “here, there and everywhere”. I think that is the price you pay for serious work, and a high level of enjoyment.
