Mrs Hélène Pêtre, who fought for the survival of the "VIEUX BARBET" has died at the age of 87. She was the daughter of Dr Vincenti, Kennel Mas de la Chapelle, famous in the 1930's for his work for the breed Barbet.
Her kennel name was Barbochos Reiau de Prouvenco. She gave us some great champions and continued a type of dog that she fought for( which was NOT a Poodle type). She was the expert in the breed type,"mais c'est pas un Barbet"she often used to say about dogs she saw here and there. Mr Rainier T Georgii, did his best to continue the line, meaning the TYPE. I was lucky to inherit from both of them, their archives, to (now) do my best for the old breed. We had some fun times together at her home talking up storms over her breeding and putting every detail in the right place for the future. I will miss her immensely.

I will never be the world’s oldest Barbet breeder in age or in time spent breeding..I am not a breeder and that is not my claim to fame. What has been important to me and always will be is showing that, yes, you can breed out the Poodle type, work to standard, make homogenous dogs of the old type called “Vieux Barbet” ( as opposed to Barbet MODERNE, re-incarnated in the 80’s). So, I collect Barbets and under my roof, there are 5 generations, 7 dogs, all happy and healthy and enjoying life. Anyone is welcome to come and see my live collection and documents I have available…Between Coccolina and Blue, there are 12 years difference and I enjoy every minute I can spend with them! A passion I owe to several people from the past…a passion for the VIEUX BARBET, its evolution, its history as a gundog and survival from extinction.
One of my very very favorite Barbet videos to celebrate the joy and happiness of our Barbets and through them, …ours.
We are blessed to have such, nice, happy, friendly dogs, called Barbets! Happy New year and bless the Barbet God, because I know there is one, for Fanny de la serve de la chapelle d’Alexandre’s coming home after having disappeared for almost 3 months and having puppies somewhere, in the meantime….
And as it says in the song, we’re one passing through..so be kind..and enjoy life for theirs is so short.
We have finished this visual part of the history of the breed. It is so, for there are no language barriers to consider.
There are a few mistakes to be corrected after the holidays, which will not stop your understanding of the evolution of the Barbet.
My main objective was to finish today, a very historical day, and to give fuel to those who need it for their “petite” discussion about the breed…
I hope you enjoy it as I did, working on it for several years.
I am onto my next Barbet project! Stay tuned and Happy Holidays to all!
This site above has not beren updated in 3 years? There have been over 3000 clicks since last week! Not happy with the nothingness you can find on the net around the Barbet and its rarity? Its history? What you are looking for may be a grand dose of Barbet truth? Fear not..it’s coming….After re-doing the history of the Poodle as many who have, and hitting the wall…I started seeking more sources, “des sources plurieles” as one says. Mostly foreign, they are which severely lacked in a lot of the “internet” copy and paste world of ours. You may like to go back through this very thorough site which is regularly updated with news of the world:
